The Beliefs of John Robert Stevens

School of Prophets

The term school of prophets originates from the Old Testament with Samuel and the group of prophets he trained. Stevens used this term to describe the company of prophets that would come forth as an instrument of God’s authority, speaking His Word and creating His will in the earth. Stevens believed that schools of prophets would be very important in the end time to bring forth the Kingdom of God in the earth. “The whole theme…of the King coming and the Kingdom and the day of the Lord, largely began with the school of prophets.”1

Samuel’s school of prophets did much in their day. They set people free from spiritual oppression, protected God’s leaders from harm, and held back the apostasy of Israel. Stevens felt that today’s schools of prophets should function in much the same manner. “They will be a people who move unselfishly to do the will of God anywhere on the face of the earth, wherever God places them.”2

Within a school of prophets, spiritual gifts can be transferred from one individual to another through training and mentorship. The prophet Elisha is a great example of this. His “credentials” were simply that he was the servant of Elijah. He became a mighty prophet because he was taught the ways of the Lord as he served Elijah, and he received a double-portion of Elijah’s anointing. The training of young prophets occurs in much the same way in the school of prophets.

Bible schools were a very modern invention, and they teach a certain curriculum. The Walk will never go to the Bible school method. We are following the principle of the school of the prophets. In every local church there is a man of God who gathers young men to him. They work together and flow together. It is not long before the same thing that is in the pastor is reproduced in the young men. …The principle we follow in the Walk is to convey by communication, by direct contact. We believe that the things of God are highly catching. We can create a high level of spiritual expression which can literally sweep people into manifesting the same thing.3
